If your looking for a retreat from your daily grind, Cory and Sonia from Fisk Brook Farm, might have just what you are looking for. Set in the Catskill Mountains on 65 glorious acres in New York’s Sullivan County, Fisk Brook Farm has alot of what makes a getaway, something worth getting away to.
As is the case with any travel experience, this one is anchored in the accomodations, which, in these parts, come in the form of 2 cabins: One, a quaint A-frame micro that sleeps 2 and the other, a slightly larger cottage featuring a queen bunk bed with a pullout couch and wood fired hot tub that sleeps as many as 5 in a pinch. I’m thinking that hot tub would also make a great “cold plunge” if desired (need to suggest that), there’s plenty of places around to buy ice and winter’s got you covered in that department during the colder months.. so that’s definitely an option if permitted.

Jess and I stayed in the micro cabin, on our 1st morning there, we recieved a visit from one of the two, beautiful 9-month-old Italian Sheep Dogs that roam the property; one stopped by the cabin for some morning affection, which we happily provided. We found out later their names are Koda and Benchee, still don’t know which one stopped by!
While the views from the Cabin are wide open, there is still plenty of privacy to be found, although the cabin itself is not in the woods, desired seclusion is provided by the large open field which spans the remaining incline of the small hill which embeds the cabin.

A cooler is provided for any food storage needs, we elected instead to take a much needed break from food prep and enjoy the local cuisine, the quaint eateries in town provided the home cooked fare we were hoping for, which was highlighted by a plentiful breakfast at the New Munson Diner on Lake Street our way out of town.

Jess and I enjoyed roasting pineapple slices under a spectacular star-strewn, Winter sky and a hike around the property, which, admittedly covered only a small fraction of the large property, partially due to Jess’ crush on the 5 Alpacas which were the focal point of our visit (Maybelline, Fiona, Midnight Sky and babies,Thunder and Bambi) that live in close proximity to the cabins. We also enjoyed the creek which runs through the property, where Jess led a mediation which was so effective that I fell asleep!

As was the intent with this destination, accomodations were rustic sans running water but still an upgrade to traditonal camping thanks to a very cool top of the line compost toilet, which is a 21st century upgrade to the traditional outhouses found in the cabins of my youth. The compact but powerful electric heater does a great job adding cozy to the space and the provided provisions met our needs as promised. The mini-kitchen was stocked with basic condiments and utensils and propane griddle is provided as well if cooking is desired, as is a fire pit and an outdoor fireplace if you favor cooking over a wood fire as we do. An electric kettle, french press and coffee were also provided which was greatly appreciated by my caffiene addiction, as was a small microwave oven if the above alternatives don’t meet your needs. With plently of stores nearby as well, including an Ace Hardware, Walgreens, multiple liquor stores, a craft beer store and a full supermarket, all of which are at most a 15 minute drive from the property With strong Cell phone signals all around your degree of grid presence is at solely at your discretion.

The Catskills are rife with activities all year round. Our trip occured during a time the of year when Skiing is waning and its a bit too early for water sports so we opted for a quick trip to Neversink Gorge Trails in nearby Thompson to enjoy the 50 degree March day exploring the hiking trails and enjoying the immense beauty of the resident waterfalls.

All in all, we couldn’t have had a better time, the company, ofcourse was unrivaled and the hospitality was top notch. – J&T
