The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts –

A Little Love Goes a Long Way – By Jess and Tom

As has become a common theme on the podcast, Jess and I love to read (or listen to) books together and discuss our takeaways.

Both of us have experience in failed relationships, have learned from our past mistakes and are marching down the road toward experiencing the best version of ourselves. Our desire to build a lifelong healthy relationship with one another is central to that journey, so, when a friend of mine responded to my recent offer to prepare one of his favorite foods with the text message  “Acts of Service”, not only did I know I had a fan of Gary Chapman’s Book “The 5 Love Languages”, on my hands , it got me thinking about the book, which I had read in 2017 and remembered discussing with Jess shortly after we met. I mentioned to Jess that we should read it again see how the modern versions of ourselves measured up, she quickly agreed and we did just that. We read the book and took the Love Language Quizzes included at the end of the book and compared results, more on that here Podcast Episode

The “5 Love Languages: The Secret to a Love That Lasts” , originally written in 1992 and updated most recently in 2015, describes the 5 basic ways in which people recognize or receive love that Chapman recognized during his long career as a therapist. The 5 profiles are “Words of Affirmation”,” Acts of Service”, “Receiving Gifts”, ”Quality Time” and “Physical Touch”. Chapman also introduces the concept of “ A Full Love Tank” being crucial to the longevity of a healthy, satisfying relationship. The sole reason to learn your loved one’s Love Language is, in fact, to make sure you know how to keep their love tank full.

Over the course of almost 200 pages, Chapman details each of the 5 “Languages”, calling upon case histories from his practice as a counselor and other areas of his life to weave together an enjoyable and informative manual that shouts an answer to the question of how deep love can be kept alive in a relationship and even improve over time.

While the book focuses on romantic love, a thorough understanding of these archetypes of love recipient would certainly benefit anyone interested in expressing love or identifying when love is being expressed to them. You may even recognize that love was there all along.

I highly recommend reading this book, regardless of your current relationship status. If you are not currently in a relationship, it will help make sure you are ready to respond when the right opportunity presents itself and for anyone who is in a relationship now, consider it a critical tool toward building and maintaining a love that lasts.
